Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God (Matthew 5:8).

In Scripture, blessed means happy, a type of contentedness, an inner peace, a state of restfulness that is not created from or affected by circumstances or emotions that are ever-changing. It is a state of well-being and inner joy, rooted and grounded in the truth of Jesus Christ, who never changes. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Jesus contrasts the world’s definition of happiness with true blessedness, which is spiritual prosperity, having the gift of eternal life. This only comes from having a right relationship with God through faith in Christ (Romans 5:1).

The pure in heart refers to those who are pure in their devotion to God. True devotion to God is not just physically attending church on Sundays and maintaining mere outward religious activities and rituals of the Law, which is called legalism. Jesus preaches against obeying the Law merely by action and to be seen by others, rather than by heartfelt trust, obedience, and love for God. The pure in heart see God and obey Him out of genuine faith, gratitude, and love for Christ.

A pure heart is a heart that has nothing to do with falsehood. It isn’t hiding behind a mask. It is truthful and free from all deceit or manipulation. Deceit is when you will two things, not one thing. Deceit is when you will to do or feel one thing, and you will that people think you are doing or feeling another. That is called impurity of heart or being double-minded. Purity of heart is to will only one thing, specifically, heartfelt devotion, trust, and allegiance to God out of love.
