In Scripture, blessed means happy, a kind of contentedness, an inner peace, a state of restfulness that is not created from or affected by external circumstances. It is a state of well-being and inner joy. Jesus contrasts the world’s definition of happiness with true blessedness, which is spiritual prosperity. This only comes from having a right relationship with God through saving faith in Christ.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, (Matthew 5:10-11)

Being persecuted for sharing the gospel and for bearing the name of Christ is evidence of true faith in Jesus. Persecution purifies the church and reveals who the true followers of Jesus are.

Those who walk in darkness hate the light. The light is God’s Truth, and His Truth sheds light and exposes sin and evil deeds that are done in darkness. Therefore, believers who shine the light of God’s Truth in dark places will often be thought of as judgmental or hateful, marginalized, mocked, reviled, or hated by those who love darkness and hate to be exposed by the light. The gospel is often highly offensive because it calls us all to repent of our sins, and it warns us of the dangers of hell, which is one of the most loving things we can do for our neighbors – warn them of the burning building they are standing in and point them to eternal life in Christ. The gospel strikes the conscience, shatters egos, and is often offensive or foolish to the proud and hard-hearted. Regardless, the Truth told in love is the most loving thing there is, for Jesus Himself is the Truth. He is the light of the world, and anyone who follows Him will not walk in darkness but have the light of life (John 8:12). “If you stand for Christ, you must be willing to stand alone.” – Steve Lawson
