Romans 10:17

Updated: Oct 5, 2021

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17

Dear Lord,

May you give me the grace to boldly share the Truth with others when opportunities arise. I know that people cannot come to faith by me giving my own personal testimony or from any of my own cleverness or persuasiveness with the gospel. Rather, people come to faith from hearing the Word of God, by the power of God. Lord, help me to simply be the messenger of Your Word and know that You are the only One who can work saving faith into the minds and hearts of people. So faith comes through hearing and hearing through the word of God. (Romans 10:17)

Faith Comes Through Hearing the Word of God

In Romans 10, Paul writes that when someone does come to faith, it is through hearing what the Lord says through the words of Christ. There are steps that must occur to bring a person to the point of faith. God sends out a messenger to preach the gospel. When the gospel reaches a person's ears, he or she has the opportunity to believe the Truth or reject it. Those who believe are the ones who call on Christ as their Lord and Savior. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!" (Romans 10:13-15)

Choosing to Receive or Reject the Gospel

Paul explains that not believing what God says amounts to disobedience. According to Scripture, this is the root problem when people hear the gospel and do not accept it. You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life (John 5:39-40). In reality, they are disobeying God in their unbelief. Those who disbelieve do so because on some level, they do not want to believe. They choose not to believe. Please Lord, soften their hearts so that they may come to saving faith in You.

All glory belongs to You, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

In Jesus’ Name I pray Amen.

And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of me but in the power of God. 1 Corinthians 2:1-5
