Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him (John 3:36). Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death (John 8:51). Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says (James 1:22). (See also James 2:14-26)

The words faith and obedience/believe and obey/disbelieve and disobey are synonymous throughout all of Scripture and are the same word in the original Greek. Obey was a common meaning of pisteuo in ancient Greek. Pisteuo means to believe, entrust, to be persuaded of, to place confidence in of the thing believed, to dedicate one’s life to, to submit one’s life to, to obey. Obedience organically results from an inward persuasion of the truth in Jesus and consequent faith.

To not believe the gospel is to simply disobey God since Scripture commands everyone to repent and believe in the gospel. And to say we believe in God, yet live a life patterned of ongoing disobedience to His Word, is evidence that we actually don't trust Him. Verbal professions of faith in God are empty and futile if someone's actions continue to deny God. They profess to know God, but by their actions they deny him (Titus 1:16). Obedience to God's Word is simply the natural by-product and outward expression of our inward faith in Him.

Our obedience to God's Word will never be perfect, and we will fail at times. But it's by His grace that we are able to obey Him, not by our own strength or personal merit. And as a general way of life, true faith in Christ naturally obeys through actions what it trusts in its heart. True faith and obedience are inseparable. As much as one cannot separate heat from fire, one cannot separate saving faith from obedience. What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? (James 2:14). Salvation is not by works but by grace alone through faith alone, which naturally produces good works. (Ephesians 2:8-10)
