If The Bible Were a Ring

There's a famous analogy about the Book of Romans, specifically chapter 8—If the Bible were a ring, the Book of Romans would be the diamond on that ring, and Romans Chapter 8 would be the apex of that diamond. Whenever I need comfort, encouragement, or just a major reality check, I often read through Romans 8. It's one of my "go-to" places in the Bible.

Romans 8 is considered one of the greatest chapters in all of Scripture because it traces the entire journey of the Christian faith—beginning with absolute assurance of our salvation in Christ and ending with Jesus’ inseparable love toward us. As the apex of the diamond, Romans 8 radiates the brilliant facets of the Christian faith:

• No Condemnation 

It opens with Paul’s famous declaration that "there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1). Paul tells us with absolute certainty and confidence that there is no condemnation for the believer. None whatsoever. So, if you're "in Christ Jesus," God will never condemn you for any sin —past, present, or future. The believer is secure in Him forever, no matter what. Yet, there is an absolute condition to this promise—salvation is granted only to the one who trusts in Christ alone. Jesus paid it all for us through His perfect life, death on the cross, and resurrection. Salvation is a free gift, by grace alone through faith alone. It cannot be earned (Romans 6:23, Ephesians 2:8-9).

The Bible is clear that there is no other name under Heaven given to mankind or any other way of salvation that exists (Acts 4:12). The Bible is also clear that those who reject God's only way of salvation are condemned already and will not escape condemnation (John 3:18), unless they repent of their sins and pur their faith in Christ alone.

• The Holy Spirit

Throughout the chapter, Paul emphasizes how the Holy Spirit comes to live inside believers (Rom 8:9-11). With God living inside of us, He empowers us to live out the Christian faith and gives us assurance that we are children of God, as well as heirs of Christ and of God’s glory (Romans 8:4-17). Furthermore, Paul tells us that the Holy Spirit helps us in our weaknesses, and when we don’t have the words, He prays for us according to the will of God (Romans 8:26-27). The Holy Spirit is the One who helps us live out our faith in Jesus. He leads and teaches us, convicts and comforts us, and empowers us to have victory over our sin, trials, the devil and the world, ultimately helping us to become more like Jesus.

So Christian, do not be afraid because Scripture tells us, You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world (1 John 4:4).

• Present Suffering vs. Future Glory

Paul acknowledges that this earthly life is full of trials and suffering, but he emphasizes that "our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us" (Romans 8:18). One day, every believer and all of creation will be totally freed from its corruption—and that we all long for that day with eager anticipation, patience, confidence, and hope (Romans 8:19-23).

While we wait in eager anticipation, we also stay grounded. We wholeheartedly carry out our earthly responsibilities while enduring trials, and we do this best by keeping an eternal perspective. When we practice setting our minds on eternal things, our earthly life will start aligning with God's will.

• God's Sovereignty

It contains the golden promise of God’s plan for us before the foundation of the world—that for those who love God and are called according to His purpose, He works all things together for our good, ultimately to conform us to the image of His Son, Jesus. That is the main goal of the entire Christian life—to become more like Jesus. We have been predestined, called, justified, and one day we will also be glorified (Romans 8:28-30).

One day when we are ultimately glorified, we will see Jesus as He really is because we will be like Him. Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but He has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He really is  (1 John 3:2).

• God's Love 

The book of Romans finishes with the most brilliant sparkle. Paul asks, "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?" He includes everything in the human experience that one might think could possibly separate us. And Paul emphatically concludes the chapter with saying that absolutely nothing in all of creation could ever separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39). What a statement! What a comforting truth!

What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can be against us?
